The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has condoled his Lagos State counterpart Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the people of the state over the unfortunate helicopter crash in Ikeja axis of the state, which claimed two lives and left one person injured. The governor, in a statement, commiserated with the family, friends and associates of the two dead victims of the crash. According to him, “I condole with the government and people of Lagos State over the unfortunate helicopter crash in the Ikeja axis of the state, which claimed two lives. Our prayers are with the families of the departed soul and we pray God grants them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. “I send condolences to Governor Sanwo-Olu and his team, who are doing everything possible to manage the situation and bring comfort to the families of the deceased.”

The fortunes of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 19, 2020 gubernatorial election in Edo State has continued to nosedive as a three-time councillor and Organising Secretary of the party in Umaza Ward 3, Ovia South West Local Government Area (LGA), Rt. Hon. Steven Alufa, has dumped  the APC for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Alufa decamped with 2,000 others during the reelection campaign rally of the PDP candidate and Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, declaring their support for the PDP following the outstanding performance of the governor across all sectors of the state. Our attention was drawn to a publication released on August 28, 2020. Titled “Jubilation As Pastor Ize-Iyamu Bags Honorary Title of ‘Oyakhire’ at Ora”. In the body of the publication it read, “There’s jubilation in the camp of APC as the Palace of the Oje of Ora in Owan West LGA of Edo state, yesterday 27th of August, conferred a honorary chieftaincy title of Oyakhire' meaning, 'he who wipes our tears', on the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Edo Governorship election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.” The Ora sons and daughters will like to draw attention to the disregard for the people of Ora. Points to Note: 1. There is no title known as Okpojenagan of Ora.  2. There is Okpojenagan of Ohia-Ojiwere, the youngest Chief in Ohia.  3. The Edo State Campaign Council  of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not be dragged into the narrative on social and conventional media dwelling on the appointment of a Resident Electoral Commissioner in Edo State by the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC). The Campaign Council of Edo PDP recognises that INEC is an independent body and reserve the  right to appoint officials who have been cleared by the national Assembly to conduct elections in various states. As the commission responsible for election management, INEC will take responsibility for successes of elections and of course its failures. We are only interested in INEC conducting free, fair, credible and transparent elections. Masked gunmen in the convoy of Osagie Ize-Iyamu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday opened fire on supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who were holding a meeting in Makeke Town, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. According to Jerry Obasonmi, vice chairman of Akoko Edo Local Council, who witnessed the incident: “the PDP supporters were holding a meeting under a canopy in Makeke Town on Friday when a convoy that had the APC candidate, Ize-Iyamu; member of the House of Representatives, Peter Akpatason; Agabi Anslem; Emmanuel Agbaje and other members of the APC, with some masked men in two Prado Jeeps, drove close towards the meeting venue. “Just then, the masked men pointed their guns at the PDP supporters and started shooting. Seven persons were hit by their bullets, sustaining various degrees of injuries, including a 75-year-old man, who is in terrible pain now.”

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Friday, commissioned the fourth coronavirus (COVID-19) molecular laboratory to boost testing capacity for the disease in the state and contain the pandemic. Commissioning the testing facility at Lily Hospital in Benin City, Obaseki said: “The Lily molecular laboratory is the first privately owned PCR laboratory in the South-south region of the country. Several investments have continued to flood the state following the conducive environment created in the state. Lily Hospital has invested in a molecular laboratory that has the capacity to test for COVID-19.” The governor added: “Government can't be in competition with private businesses as healthcare is both an economic and a social good. “As a government, we will continue to encourage private people to come and invest in healthcare in Edo State. The lawyers say they have constituted a new group called New Nigerian Bar Association (NNBA). This is a fallout of the controversy that ensued after  the NBA withdrew its invitation to Nasir el-Rufai,   the Kaduna state governor, following a petition against the governor. Some lawyers had  kicked against the choice of the governor , saying the invitation is a “reward for misrule” and alleged that el-Rufai has abused the rights of Nigerians on several occasions. Another group of lawyers had also called on the NBA to withdraw its invitations to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state, as speakers for its annual conference — but the request was turned down. The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) described the NBA’s action  as a declaration of war . The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has hailed the Edo State Police Command for arresting the suspects involved in the rape and gruesome murder of a 100-level Microbiology undergraduate of the University of Benin, Miss. Uwa Omozuwa. The governor, in a statement, commended the state police command for following through with the case and working to ensure the suspects were arrested.
